Report Summary
Despite receiving only 145mm of rain annually and minimal in-crop rainfall of 30-45mm, Terry and Jenny Blanch successfully cultivated wheat, barley, and canola in the Tamworth area. Their approach focused on enhancing soil health by utilising TM Agricultural (TM Ag) applications since 2015 to activate native soil biology. In March 2019, Terry applied chook manure to selected paddocks, combined with 40kg of starter fertiliser, TM Germination (TM Seeds) on the seed, two TM Ag applications (post- and pre-sowing), and a Best Foliar Fertiliser. This integrated approach reduced chemical inputs, improved nutrient cycling, promoted the development of a robust root system that enabled the crop to better withstand drought, and enhanced plant health as evidenced by high brix levels (14-17°Bx) compared to the normal 12°Bx. These elevated brix levels improved resistance to pests and diseases. As a result, the wheat and barley exhibited higher test weights, lower screenings, and greater mineral density, while the canola produced an outstanding oil content of more than 45%, showcasing the power of soil health in overcoming challenging conditions.
